Natural Skincare Certifications, Explained

21 July 2026

Walk down any skincare aisle and the labels shout at you: natural, vegan, cruelty-free, dermatologically tested, free from this and that. Some of it is meaningful. Some of it is marketing. If you are choosing products for sensitive skin, a baby, or your own skin during pregnancy, it helps to know which badges are backed by an independent check and which are just a nice word on the front. Here is a plain-English guide to the certifications and clean-ingredient claims the INCIA range carries, and why each one might matter to you.

What does a natural certification actually mean?

The word natural is not legally protected on its own, so a certification is the part that counts. Depending on the product, the INCIA range carries recognised natural credentials including Ecocert and ETKO Cosmos Natural. These are independent bodies that audit a formula against a published standard: what percentage of ingredients come from natural sources, how they are processed, and which synthetic ingredients are not allowed. In our sun care, for example, the mineral UV filter is non-nano, Ecocert-certified titanium dioxide. The point of a certification is simple: someone other than the brand has checked that the label matches what is really in the bottle.

Vegan and cruelty-free: two claims, not one

People often use these interchangeably, but they cover different things. Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients, so no beeswax, lanolin, carmine or milk proteins. Cruelty-free means the product and its ingredients are not tested on animals. A product can be one without the other. INCIA products are formulated to be both vegan and cruelty-free, and across the range the brand holds The Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny credentials, the two logos most widely recognised in the UK and Europe. If avoiding animal ingredients and animal testing matters to your household, those are the marks worth looking for.

Dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic

These two turn up a lot on gentle ranges, and for good reason. Dermatologically tested means the finished product has been assessed on skin under professional supervision. Hypoallergenic means it has been formulated to keep the chance of an allergic reaction low, usually by leaving out common triggers like synthetic fragrance. Neither is a promise that nobody will ever react, because skin is personal, but both are useful signals when you are shopping for reactive skin, eczema-prone skin, or a newborn. If your skin flares easily, our gentle approach to eczema walks through choosing products that keep irritation to a minimum.

What "free from" really tells you

A "free from" claim tells you what has been left out. It is not a verdict that the ingredient is bad for everyone, more a heads-up for people who prefer to avoid it. The ones you will see most often on INCIA labels are:

  • SLS and sulphates. Strong foaming agents. Some people with sensitive skin find gentler cleansers more comfortable.
  • Parabens. A group of synthetic preservatives many shoppers choose to skip.
  • Synthetic fragrance. A common trigger for sensitive and reactive skin, which is why fragrance-free formulas are popular for babies.
  • Mineral oils. Petroleum-derived. INCIA uses cold-pressed plant oils instead.

None of this means conventional products are unsafe. It simply means these formulas suit anyone who would rather leave those ingredients out.

Why this matters more for babies and in pregnancy

Newborn skin is thinner than adult skin and absorbs more of what is put on it, so fewer ingredients and no harsh extras is the sensible default. In pregnancy, hormones often leave skin drier and more sensitive than usual, and many people become more mindful of what they use. This is where certifications earn their keep: a natural credential plus dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic gives you a shortlist you can trust without reading every INCI line. You will find products chosen with this in mind across our natural mum and baby care collection, from the Natural Baby Oil to the Preventive Diaper Rash Gel. As ever, if you have a skin condition or you are unsure about anything while expecting, check with your midwife, GP or pharmacist first.

A quick word on natural deodorant

Deodorant is a good example of the clean-ingredient idea in practice. The INCIA Natural Deodorant for Sensitive Skin is a roll-on made with a natural mineral salt and aloe vera, and it is free from alcohol, parabens and synthetic fragrances. It is formulated to be gentle enough to use after shaving and is suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Same principle as the rest of the range: keep what works, leave out what tends to irritate.

Fluoride-free toothpaste: an honest look

INCIA makes a fluoride-free option, and it is worth being straightforward about this one. The INCIA Natural Toothpaste is fluoride-free and SLS-free, made with xylitol and cinnamon, for people who choose to avoid fluoride. That is a personal preference, and this product is here for those who want it. It is not the whole story, though: fluoride has recognised benefits for dental health, and going fluoride-free is a choice you should make with proper advice. If you are unsure whether you or your children need fluoride, ask your dentist. They know your teeth, and a toothpaste label cannot give you that answer.

How to read a label with confidence

You do not need to memorise every ingredient. A short checklist does most of the work: look for a recognised natural certification, check for vegan and cruelty-free marks if those matter to you, and see whether the product is dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic if your skin is sensitive. Then glance at the "free from" list to confirm it leaves out anything you would rather avoid. That is the quiet promise behind the INCIA range, which you can explore across our natural personal care collection. We are the official UK distributor, so stock ships from the UK.
